“Tutto ciò che è profondo ama la maschera, e le cose più profonde nutrono addirittura odio per quel che è immagine e somiglianza.”

Leonardo da Vinci was born on this day in 1452. The world-renowned polymath excelled as a painter, sculptor, architect, designer, theorist, engineer, and scientist, though he was often more interested in the design and exploratory phases of his work than bringing them to completion. Widely recognized as the father of the High Renaissance, even though he was of the same generation as Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510), Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-94), and Filippino Lippi (1457-1504), rather than Michelangelo (1475-1564) or Raphael (1483-1520). Though Leonardo famously didn’t complete a number of major commissions, those that he did are today some of the most recognizable images of the Italian Renaissance.

Ricordo: come addì 8 d’aprile 1503 io Lionardo daVinci prestai a Vante miniatore ducati 4 d’oro in oro, portògli Salaì e li dette in sua propia mano. Disse rendermeli infra lo spazio di 40 gionri.Ricordo: come nel sopra detto giorno io rendei a Salaì ducati 3 d’oro, i quali disse volersene fare un paio di calze rosate co’ sua fornimenti. E li restai a dare ducati 9 - posto che lui ne de’ dare a me ducati 20, cioè 17 prestati a Milano e 3 a Vinegia.
Memorandum: that on the 8th day of April 1503 I, Lionardo daVinci , lent to Vante the miniature painter four gold ducats. Salai carried them to him and gave them into his own hand, and he said he would repay them within the space of 40 days.Memorandum: that on the same day I paid to Salai 3 gold ducats which he said he wanted for a pair of rose-coloured hose with their trimming. And there remain 9 ducats due to him - excepting that he owes me 20 ducats: 17 I lent him at Milan and 3 at Venice.
[ NOTE: If you think that a pair of pink hose would be odd, there’s an account of Leonardo having a silver-coloured cloak made for him… ]
